Residents across northern Israel are being urged to take extra precautions as an intense heatwave is expected to bring dangerous conditions to the region.
The Israel Meteorological Service has warned that the heatwave will begin on Friday and reach its peak on Saturday and Sunday, with heavy heat stress expected across the country. The Sea of Galilee area and the northern valleys are forecast to be the hottest parts of Israel, with temperatures in those areas potentially reaching 47°C on Sunday.
Extreme heat is a serious health risk
Dr. Khaled Atallah, director of the Emergency Department at Galilee Medical Center, warned that extreme heat is more than a matter of discomfort. It can become a genuine medical emergency and may deteriorate rapidly into a life-threatening condition.
During severe heat, the body can struggle to regulate its temperature. Dr. Atallah said prevention is critical because heatstroke and severe dehydration can develop quickly.
How residents can reduce the risk
Galilee Medical Center is advising the public, particularly older adults, children and other vulnerable residents, to:
- Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day.
- Drink water regularly throughout the day.
- Stay in air-conditioned or cool indoor spaces whenever possible.
- Check on neighbours, relatives and other people who may need help.
Dr. Atallah said the Emergency Department is prepared for heat-related cases, while stressing that timely prevention remains the best protection.
Israel’s Ministry of Health advises seeking immediate medical attention if heatstroke is suspected, particularly when symptoms include confusion, loss of consciousness, a very high body temperature or hot, red skin. More information is available in the Ministry’s official heat-safety guidance.
